JPIV: Ruins of the Unknown [IV.]
    By AlanGrant5

    [IV.] BROKEN CONFIDENTIALITY

Days had gone by, each one lasting longer than the other. Even then, Friday seemed to have snuck up on John unexpectedly. The day he dreaded had finally arrived, causing him to realize there was no turning back. With a duffel bag slung over his shoulder, John waited at the Airport bar. He wasn’t a drinker, but today, he found himself downing a shot of scotch with little hesitation.

Startling his thoughts, Thomas Hayes tapped his shoulder, while pulling up a stool for himself to sit on. Thomas looked the same as he did when John had first met him... secretive and well dressed.

    “Dr. Weller,” Thomas greeted.

“Mr. Hayes,” John said, sliding his glass to the side.

“Didn’t know you were a drinker,” Thomas said, removing his sunglasses.

“Neither did I, but given the circumstances–”

“I know, I know,” the man said, trying to shut him up. “We have a perfectly set plan here, John, you have nothing to worry about.”

“I have nothing to worry about? I’m going to this place alone! You don’t want me to worry about that?”

“You won’t be alone for long. Listen, we discussed this already over the phone... don’t fall apart on me now.”

John sighed, with a forced grin on his face.

“I brought the tracking device,” Thomas said, removing what looked like to be an ordinary pen. “Just attach that to your coat pocket or where ever you choose to put it and once you arrive at the facility, we’ll move in.”

John took the device and tucked it into his duffel bag. “Remind me why you can’t just bust them on the spot?”

Tom sighed, “Because, there is too much risk involved. If we bust them here, we might not ever get the facilities location. Your not alone on this John, I have your back.” Thomas tried to reassure him.

John nodded his head, leaving a tip on the bar counter. “Well, unless you want to screw up your own plans, I’d suggest you be on your way,” John said as he stared at an approaching African American man.

Thomas Hayes turned around, only to find Brian Watson greeting John. He quickly rotated back to the bar counter, making sure the man saw nothing but the back of his head. Brian couldn’t know he was there... it would ruin everything.

“John, how’s it going man?” Brian greeted. It was difficult to determine Brian’s age. He could of easily had been in his early thirties but could of believably had been in his early forties. Brian Watson, Biosyn’s newly elected CEO, stood six-one, wearing an impressive suit that mocked John’s fashion sense.

“Good. So where exactly is this museum of yours?”

Brian smiled, “If I told you, I’d have to kill you John.”

The answer had annoyed John more so than it made him laugh.

“You’ll see. It’ll knock the socks off you, believe me,” Brian said, walking alongside John.

The two of them walked out into the cold Alaskan climate, leaving the warmth the interior had generated behind. A hazy sun cast its dim, yet effective light onto a small plane which awaited their presence. John looked back, only to find Thomas Hayes giving him a thumb up. What the hell was that supposed to be? A good luck gesture? There was no such thing as good luck when it came to the situation. John was fully aware of the incidents that had occurred, due to the cloning of dinosaurs, and new damn well of the consequences. Brian was talking to him, but John failed to listen, only giving the impression that he was by an occasional nod and smile. All he could hear was the thumping his heart made against his rib cage.

A door opened, followed by a staircase unfolding. John boarded the plane first, then Brian. He was now inside the plane... one step closer to oblivion. The plane was fit to serve the richest of the rich, making John feel a little out of place. Brian shut the door behind him, trapping the comfortable warmth already fixated in the plane.

“Have a seat,” Brian ordered, placing him in a leather chair.

John tried to look out the windows, but they were covered in a morning frost. Brian sat beside the former paleontologist, placing a briefcase onto his lap.

“Take a look at this,” Brian said holding out a piece of paper.

John turned in his seat to view the stationary. It was a very detailed drawing of, what he assumed to be, the facility. John was quick to notice that it was a map of the facility and that the facility itself was surround on all sides, by water.

“It is an island...” he muttered.

    “Excuse me?” Brian asked.

“Your, your facility... it’s on an island.”

“Yes... forty eight miles off the coast of Japan actually.”

John stared at the map. “What’s the name of this island?”

“Well to tell you the truth, the island has no name... at least not yet. The island itself is a resurrected land mass that was discovered two, three years ago. Our company leased it soon after.”

John nodded his head in response to Brian’s explanation, then set the map aside. “Why on an island? Why not back in the states... Cupertino?” John asked, already knowing the answer, yet wanting to hear it for himself.

“Well, the operations we’ve performed aren’t exactly what we’d call ‘legal’ back in the states.”

    “Oh? And why not?”

Brian began to laugh. “Come on John, cut the charade. I know your not that naive. The questions we’ve asked of you, time and time again, our funding your digs, our interest in prehistoric life? Don’t tell me that wasn’t a dead give away?”

    “You are cloning dinosaurs?”

“Was there ever any doubt? Listen John, we’ve taken extra precautions, to assure the islands stability. We’re not InGen for God’s sake.”

“No your not... just a carbon copy,” John said.

“Ouch... that hurt’s John,” Brian said sarcastically.

“Not as much as the law suits you’ll have to dodge,” John snapped.

    Brian found John’s attitude amusing.

“Relax John. Don’t be so up tight about this, huh? You’ll see for yourself... this place is flawless. Believe me, we’ve learned from InGen’s mistakes and have taken a few notes regarding them.”

John stared at Brian in disbelief. “History repeats itself Brian... if you haven’t noticed that then you must of been under a rock your entire existence.”

“Listen, if you want out, then by all means, there’s the door. If you want to look past your superstitions, which I suggest, then your more than welcome to stay. Which will it be?”

Suddenly, John was reminded of his duties. He had let his emotions interfere with his designations. “I’ll stay... I’m just a little upset that you hadn’t brought this to my attention earlier.”

“Would you have helped me if I had told you the true purpose?”

There was a brief moment of silence. In all honesty, John wouldn’t have helped him out, had he told him the truth, but he wasn’t about to tell him that.

“Before we can actually head over to the island I’m gonna have to get you to sign a few things,” Brian said, removing several documents from his folder. He gently placed them onto John’s lap.

    “What am I signing?”

“Confidentiality contracts. Should you not except the job offer, you’ll have to pretend as if this never happened... won’t be easy, but we need to get something in writing.” Brian handed John a pen. John took the pen and placed it on the dotted line in which his name belonged. John thought for a moment. He had already broken the confidentiality agreement after he had discussed the island’s purpose with Thomas Hayes.A bit hesitant, John signed the document, as if he had signed it with his own blood.

“Great,” Brian said as John finished. “Let’s see the island now, shall we?”

John nodded, then heard the plane’s engines boom. Soon enough the plane was far from the ground and flying over the vast, blue waters known as the Pacific Ocean. John stared at the ripples in the ocean and was drawn in by their hypnotic presence. Deep inside him, he knew things wouldn’t turn out well. Situations involving cloned dinosaurs, never did...
